7 Excellent, Affordable 'Your Lips, But Better' Lippies

There’s nothing quite like a rosy or mauvy neutral lip when you want to look polished, but not like you’re “trying too hard”. If you’ve been watching my videos or following my blog for awhile, then you know how much I love a good “your lips, but better” kind of shade. So, with that in mind, I thought I’d round up a few of my favorites for this post. 😊

For this lippie round-up, I chose 5 lipsticks (3 mattes & 2 creams) & 2 lipglosses. Note: Some of these lippies look much better in person than they do in these up close & personal lip swatches. Lol, you have been warned. Ok, let’s dive in!

Catrice Matte 6hr Lip Artist Lipstick in Best RoseBUDDIES Forever

This is a new love of mine. If you saw my recent Catrice Haul video, then you already know about this one. It is the perfect rosy shade for every day. Not only that, but it’s a comfortable matte formula. I can’t stand mattes that are overly drying. Not only is this one NOT drying, it also has a long-lasting formula.

Maybelline Creamy Matte Lipstick in A Touch of Spice

This one is somewhat darker with some brown undertones, as well as some mauvy-ness (Come on Gloria, is that even a word? Um, maybe not. I’m making up a new word folks! 😆). Since this one is darker & has a little more drama, you might need to be a little more careful about what kind of look you pair it with. Still, it is a versatile color & will work with a variety of looks. As the name implies, it also has a very comfortable, creamy matte formula. This one actually applies more smoothly than the one from Catrice, but, I think, the next one might be my favorite matte formula thus far.

elf studio matte lipcolor in praline

This one has more brownish tones to it than the other 2, but it still has enough rosiness to it to make it wearable. I would classify this as more of a demi matte shade. In an up close shot, you can see a slight sheen, but, in person, you still get a nice soft matte effect. I think this formula is probably the most forgiving of the bunch. What do I mean by that?

Well, mattes have a tendency to accent fine lines & dryness on the lips. If the formula is the more drying type, your lips can look like a shriveled prune (not cute). This one gives a soft matte look, yet the lips look relatively soft & supple. That’s why this is my favorite matte formula.

I have this line of lippies in many shades & I love most of them. The only 2 I didn’t like were natural & tea rose, but that’s only because the shades didn’t suit me (too close to my skin tone, blanked out my lips). I only wish they would come out with more shades. I would love to see some rosy & mauvy neutrals in this line.

Avon Ultra Color Lipstick in Toasted Rose

Umm, ok so I probably should’ve exfoliated before slathering on lippies. Lol. This is the first swatch I did. Bad swatch aside, I really love this lipstick. Unlike the first 3 lippies, this is a cream not a matte & it is very creamy. The wear is comfortable & it’s the perfect everyday rosy shade. This is one I’ve often kept in my purse because it can go with so many looks.

NYX Butter Lipstick in Rootbeer Float

Pops is no longer available, but Rootbeer Float is, essentially, the same shade. This is another great one to keep in your bag & it is, in fact, currently in my bag. This one is more neutral than the Avon lippie. It’s more of a pinky-nude than a rose, but still has enough pink to give your lips a nice healthy flush. And, of course, it’s a butter lipstick, so you know it’s creamy & comfy. 😊

elf ex-tra lipgloss in Michael

I LOVE this gloss so much! Not only is it nicely pigmented, it is so smooth. I can’t stand a sticky gloss. I know that they last longer than a non-sticky gloss, but I personally would rather re-apply than deal with the discomfort. And this one is so comfortable. And how can you not love that rosy shade? So perfect for every day. This is another one I keep in my purse.

Revlon ColorBurst Lipgloss in Rose Pearl

This one is completely different from all the others because of its pearly shimmer. Shimmery lip colors can get cringe-worthy really quick (especially on drier, more mature lips), but, when done right, they can be absolutely lovely. This is one such shade. The shimmer in this is fine so you won’t feel any grittiness on the lips. There’s no glitter, just a fine pearl that gives your lips the most beautiful lustrous sheen. And, of course, the rosy shade is beautiful & versatile.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve reached for this gloss to finish off a look (like the one shown above) & it set it off perfectly. If you want to lightly dip your toe into the metallic lip trend, without looking like a frosty fugitive from the 1980s, this might be a good place to start.

Well, that’s it, folks! I hope you enjoyed this round-up of some of my favorite neutral lippies. What are your favorite “your lips, but better” shades that you think I should try? Do share in the comments! 😊
